Turn in the road

Although the turn in the road is not a part of the driving test as a manoeuvre, it is still required to know. The reason for this, is, you may go the wrong way and be asked to turn the car around. This may be the quickest and safest way to do it.

Also just in everyday driving, you may need to turn your vehicle around.

Why you may need to do a turn in the road

You may need to do a turn in the road because the road ahead is blocked by an accident and the police or another authorised person is turning the traffic around. It may be that the road that you're on is actually a dead end or a no through Rd or you may just have gone the wrong way on the sat NAV is telling you to turn around or the examiner is telling you to turn around and go back in the original direction

Where to pull up

The first thing you need to do is look for somewhere safe legal and convenient to pull up at the side of the road .

That means safe you're not pulling up on bend or the brow of a hill

legal means there's no road markings saying that you can't, such as zigzag lines, double red lines, there's no Road signs meaning no stopping.

convenient means you're not pulling up across somebody's driveway to block them

Observations

Once you've pulled up and prepared your car to move off the next thing is observations

this includes checking the centre mirror for what's coming from behind the right mirror for if anybody is already going around you and over the right shoulder blind check to make sure there's nothing there that isn't covered in your mirrors

Full right Lock

Having made sure that it is safe to begin you need to as you start to very slowly move forward steer all the way to the right until the steering won't turn anymore. This is known as full right lock

Reverse and Full Left Lock

Just before you get to the kerb you need to start steering back to the left so the wheels are facing in the opposite direction as much as possible then stop handbrake on into reverse and then prepare the car to move off again

before you do check round this time write blind spot first right door mirror, centre mirror, left mirror, left blind spot, then start to reverse backwards steering all the way to the left which is known as full left lock

Full observations and drive forward

Just before you reach the kerb, start to steer to the right then stop before you reach the curb the curb will be now closest on your right hand side. Once you start to go into first gear prepare the car to go then again do the observation of left blind spot left mirror centre mirror right mirror right blind spot one more look to the left just to make sure there are no more cars or other vehicles coming towards you to get past then if it's safe start to move forward steering back to the normal driving position
